A Simple Mercury Retrograde Spell

As we get closer to the actual Mercury Retrograde this season the stars are energetically  charged with the potential for disaster if we fight the catharsis that they promise to bring into our lives.  Even astrological non-believers cringe at the thought of the chaos that a Mercury Retrograde can bring. Mercury, the planet of communication does not literally go backwards during this time, but its orbit does vary and consequently the aspects of every day life that are governed by the trickster planet go awry.

Mercury is your mental actions, communication, and rational energy. Mercury rules over your intellect, perception and reason, or good sense.

Mercury encompasses all avenues of communicating, reason, analysis, and aptitude. Mercury carries the Moons currents into communicative systems.

Mercury governs how we understand, the way we speak and the way we think. Mercury is also in charge of learning, searches, answers, descriptions and instruction.

Antique documents, books and aged things; correspondences, written words, and
declarations; new ideas and new things are all established in Mercury’s realm.

When Mercury changes its orbit it is obvious how this seeming “reversal” affects all astrological signs in varying degrees according to where and how much Mercury is placed in their astrological charts. For some the chaos feels like nothing more than the tap of a fly crashing into a windshield, but for others it feels like a full on collision with a freight train.  Every season I give advice on how to manage this difficult period. This time I am having difficulty meeting with a colleague who can’t seem to get her car out of the shop. And so, I concocted a simple spell to finally clear the way for us having a meeting that could and should benefit both of our careers.

Ingredients:

• A black taper candle
• Lavender oil
• A metal pie pan
• A glass of water
• Gold magnetic dust
• Lavender Incense

Magickal Principles:

Even though this is a simple working all five elements are duly represented. Earth – gold magnetic dust,  Air – Lavender incense, Fire – the black candle , Water – the glass of water, Ether – in order to make this work successful you must BELIEVE that it will work.

Intent:

This work is designed to “reverse” the negative effects of the Mercury Retrograde. What is turned upside down, will be made to magickally turn right side up.

Method:

• Since it is traditional to do work in the an altar placed in the East, this time put your altar however small it is in the West.
• Take the taper candle and turn it upside down and take off  enough wax from the bottom to create a wick.
• Put a few drops of the Lavender oil on your finger and anoint the candle by rubbing the oil on the candle away from you instead of to you.
• Sprinkle the gold magnetic sand on the candle very lightly so the candle is covered, but in a very light layer.
• Light the original wick, turn the candle upside down and drip enough wax on the pan to secure the candle upright, with the original wick facing down and the new wick facing up. You are going to stick the candle into the pie pan by using the wax as a sort of “glue.”
• Next you are going to put the glass of water on the makeshift altar next to the candle.
• Then, put the lavender incense in an incense holder and light it next to the pie pan as well. The glass and the incense should be on either side of the pan with the candle in it.
• Finally, light the candle and relax.

Charging the Candle:

Sit in front of the altar in a chair or on the floor. The important thing is to be comfortable and to have a clear view of the candle flame. Stare at the candle unblinking for a few seconds focusing on the flame. Close your eyes and then open them again and continue to stare at the candle for as long as you can without blinking. As you do this breathe deeply and exhale very gently. Do this until you feel like you are verging on a sleepy/relaxed/hypnotic state.

What is happening?

As you have gone through the process of preparing the candle, the incense and the altar; you have been giving your subconscious non-verbal messages. You have been telling it that you want to reverse the effects of the Mercury Retrograde with color, scent and the Five Elements. Essentially, you have been communicating with your subconscious and telling it without words but by actions combined with your senses what you want to create.

Why does this work?

Your subconscious mind is a very powerful source of what we call magick. It is not your conscious mind that creates magick … because your conscious mind doesn’t understand it. But … your subconscious mind intuitively understands, not necessarily by thought, but mainly through your senses. The scent of the lavender tells your subconscious that you are working with Mercury. Your sight tells you by recognizing the color black as something that you want to make go away that you are banishing and furthermore burning the candle upside down tells your subconscious mind that you want to reverse something. Your subconscious also recognizes fire as fuel or a power source and ultimately the act of putting the gold magnetic sand on the candle itself communicates to your subconscious a message that you want energy drawn to the candle itself … which is a non-verbal message to the universe

“I want to banish and reverse the effects of Mercury Retrograde.”

When you have that realization say it out loud as many times as you feel you need to to make that statement true.

Letting it work:

You can sit and meditate for as long as you want. Become secure in the your subconscious has heard your message and be confident that it will do what you ask it to do… because your subconscious is designed to work with energy, so trust it to do the job.

Safety Concerns:

Make sure that the candle is secure so that there is no danger of it tipping over and starting a fire. Likewise make sure that if you leave the candle unattended that you either blow it out when you cannot watch it, or you leave it someplace where it can do no harm should it accidentally tip over like a bathtub or a secure outside patio.
