A Simple Mercury Retrograde Spell

As we get closer to the actual Mercury Retrograde this season the stars are energetically  charged with the potential for disaster if we fight the catharsis that they promise to bring into our lives.  Even astrological non-believers cringe at the thought of the chaos that a Mercury Retrograde can bring. Mercury, the planet of communication does not literally go backwards during this time, but its orbit does vary and consequently the aspects of every day life that are governed by the trickster planet go awry.

Mercury is your mental actions, communication, and rational energy. Mercury rules over your intellect, perception and reason, or good sense.

Mercury encompasses all avenues of communicating, reason, analysis, and aptitude. Mercury carries the Moons currents into communicative systems.

Mercury governs how we understand, the way we speak and the way we think. Mercury is also in charge of learning, searches, answers, descriptions and instruction.

Antique documents, books and aged things; correspondences, written words, and
declarations; new ideas and new things are all established in Mercury’s realm.

Mercury pushes us to discover, take heed, mull over and react.

Mercury regulates affairs import and export, trade, commercialism, and revenue.

Thank you much

When Mercury changes its orbit it is obvious how this seeming “reversal” affects all astrological signs in varying degrees according to where and how much Mercury is placed in their astrological charts. For some the chaos feels like nothing more than the tap of a fly crashing into a windshield, but for others it feels like a full on collision with a freight train.  Every season I give advice on how to manage this difficult period. This time I am having difficulty meeting with a colleague who can’t seem to get her car out of the shop. And so, I concocted a simple spell to finally clear the way for us having a meeting that could and should benefit both of our careers.

  • A black taper candle
  • Lavender oil
  • A metal pie pan
  • A glass of water
  • Gold magnetic dust
  • Lavender Incense

Magickal Principles:

Even though this is a simple working all five elements are duly represented. Earth – gold magnetic dust,  Air – Lavender incense, Fire – the black candle , Water – the glass of water, Ether – in order to make this work successful you must BELIEVE that it will work.

This work is designed to “reverse” the negative effects of the Mercury Retrograde. What is turned upside down, will be made to magickally turn right side up.

  • Since it is traditional to do work in the an altar placed in the East, this time put your altar however small it is in the West.
  • Take the taper candle and turn it upside down and take off  enough wax from the bottom to create a wick.
  • Put a few drops of the Lavender oil on your finger and anoint the candle by rubbing the oil on the candle away from you instead of to you.
  • Sprinkle the gold magnetic sand on the candle very lightly so the candle is covered, but in a very light layer.
  • Light the original wick, turn the candle upside down and drip enough wax on the pan to secure the candle upright, with the original wick facing down and the new wick facing up. You are going to stick the candle into the pie pan by using the wax as a sort of “glue.”
  • Next you are going to put the glass of water on the makeshift altar next to the candle.
  • Then, put the lavender incense in an incense holder and light it next to the pie pan as well. The glass and the incense should be on either side of the pan with the candle in it.
  • Finally, light the candle and relax.

Charging the Candle:

Sit in front of the altar in a chair or on the floor. The important thing is to be comfortable and to have a clear view of the candle flame. Stare at the candle unblinking for a few seconds focusing on the flame. Close your eyes and then open them again and continue to stare at the candle for as long as you can without blinking. As you do this breathe deeply and exhale very gently. Do this until you feel like you are verging on a sleepy/relaxed/hypnotic state.

What is happening?

As you have gone through the process of preparing the candle, the incense and the altar; you have been giving your subconscious non-verbal messages. You have been telling it that you want to reverse the effects of the Mercury Retrograde with color, scent and the Five Elements. Essentially, you have been communicating with your subconscious and telling it without words but by actions combined with your senses what you want to create.

Why does this work?

Your subconscious mind is a very powerful source of what we call magick. It is not your conscious mind that creates magick … because your conscious mind doesn’t understand it. But … your subconscious mind intuitively understands, not necessarily by thought, but mainly through your senses. The scent of the lavender tells your subconscious that you are working with Mercury. Your sight tells you by recognizing the color black as something that you want to make go away that you are banishing and furthermore burning the candle upside down tells your subconscious mind that you want to reverse something. Your subconscious also recognizes fire as fuel or a power source and ultimately the act of putting the gold magnetic sand on the candle itself communicates to your subconscious a message that you want energy drawn to the candle itself … which is a non-verbal message to the universe

“I want to banish and reverse the effects of Mercury Retrograde.”

When you have that realization say it out loud as many times as you feel you need to to make that statement true.

Letting it work:

You can sit and meditate for as long as you want. Become secure in the your subconscious has heard your message and be confident that it will do what you ask it to do… because your subconscious is designed to work with energy, so trust it to do the job.

Safety Concerns:

Make sure that the candle is secure so that there is no danger of it tipping over and starting a fire. Likewise make sure that if you leave the candle unattended that you either blow it out when you cannot watch it, or you leave it someplace where it can do no harm should it accidentally tip over like a bathtub or a secure outside patio.

Picasso: The Artist Ex Morte Vita (of Life and Death)

Born: October 25, 1881, Málaga, Spain

Died: April 8, 1973, Mougins, France

Full name: Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso.

Photo Credit:  Self Portrait Facing Death (June 30, 1972).

“He did not blink. I had the sudden impression that he was staring his own death in the face, like a good Spaniard”  Pierre Daix

As a child I was so influenced by Picasso that when I created drawings of faces I intentionally positioned both eyes askew because that was how I thought you were supposed to draw eyes. When my teacher pointed this out to my mother at a parent teacher conference my mother was so proud. She recognized what I was doing. “My daughter is copying Picasso!” she said with pride.

In our house there were odds bits of art all about. Most of them were framed copies that my mother collected and displayed with the garish glee of a Pilipina who had seen the world. I was taught that a Picasso was the pinnacle of Modern Art. And for a child that meant that modern art had nothing to do with reality but everything to do with how life appeared when you crossed your eyes. LOL

Mermaid Crowned MerPalooza Bad Ass Introduces Her Muse and Her Pod

Style Coven caught up with MerPalooza 2012’s Bad Ass Mermaid Chelsea Holifield after what turned out to be quite the successful and controversial event at Wyndham Orlando Resort. (For more on the controversy, see Style Coven Exclusive – MerPalooza 2012 Mermaid Convention Ousted from International Palms Resort in Orlando Florida for Supporting Gay Rights!).

With help and encouragement from her family and her muse (famous Hollywood “tail man” Thom Shouse), Chelsea became enamored with mermaiding, trained to swim with a tail, met her earthly mermaid pod at MerPalooza and was crowned the show’s most bad ass fishy lady.

Held Aug. 11-12, MerPalooza 2012 was the world’s biggest mermaid-themed gathering ever. Hundreds of mermaids, pirates, fairies and other magical and mythological creatures showed up at The Wyndham Orlando Resort for a trade show, swim fun day with pool games, a mermaid pageant and charity event.

We are fascinated by this emerging mermaid trend (even Disney got into the act by hosting a mermaid recruiting booth at the show!). For an insider look at today’s mermaids, here are some excerpts from our deep sea soul searching interview with bad ass Chelsea Holifield.

How did you win the MerPalooza trophy?

I am not a pageant girl, fashion girl or even considered trendy. I have never won an actual trophy and this one means more to me than I thought a trophy could. After a long weekend of being not only the smallest one in the pod, it turns out I am the toughest!

I always carry a knife (and thanks to new mer pal Robin), I had a new knife that I proudly carried against my back the whole time. I’m kind of the edgy mermaid.  I come from a pirate Renaissance faire background and I know how to take care of business. I don’t mind getting dirty or working hard. Because of all this, I was given the nick name Mer-Gyver, which I proudly accepted and now wear as a badge of honor. After busting tail at the MerPalooza trade show, I was given my trophy! Thom gave me the trophy for being a BAM (bad ass mermaid). I worked hard, I kicked ass, and Mer-Gyver was born!

I would never have the opportunities I have now without Thom. Thom is more than a boss. He is my Mer-Papa. Thom teaches us, watches over us and laughs with us. With him and the other girls, we are more than a pod of mermaids: We are a family of mermaids who really love and care for each other

What inspired you to become a mermaid?

I wasn’t inspired by a movie though like most I love (the 90s blockbuster film) Splash. I wasn’t inspired by a loss or tragedy like some in the (mermaid) community who have a story to share. I wasn’t inspired by a person or a place. I was just born with a grand adoration of water. I love the ocean, rivers, streams and pools.

Wherever there is water, chances are I am in it! I am Pisces, I have been swimming since I was two years old and I’ve been a scuba diver since I turned 18. My mother refers to me as her water baby and I was raised with the old stories of mermaids, sirens and sailors.

In fact, I come from a long line of sailors and fisherman. My family sailed and worked the waters of the North Sea in Scotland for many centuries. For many who lived off the ocean and counted on it for survival, just as many of my family gave their lives to the North Sea. Their blood is my blood and I like to think that — though their bodies where never found — they link me to the waters of the North Sea for all times.

I feel the most grounded when I am in the water. There are sounds of silence down there, that make you forget your worries and teach you to listen to the silence of the water world around you. Being a mermaid was just the next step in my evolution. It is another extension of my own being. Being in the water connects me to my family, my element and my heart. I could not think of a more natural thing, than being a mermaid.

What did you need to do to prepare for the tail experience?

Before I was even asked to come to MerPalooza, I was in training. Thom, who knew of my back ground in diving and swimming, wanted me to be a strong swimming mermaid. After a few trips to the shop – after learning and working alongside Thom — it was time to begin my water training.

Thom gave me a large black mono fin and sent me on way. I was confident that this was going to be easy for me. Well, It’s not easy, but it’s not hard either. I could swim slowly and float about easily. As the days went by, I found myself swimming faster, longer, and most importantly, with some grace! After about a month of swimming in the mono fin, I thought I was a bad ass. I could really move with turns, twists and hand stands came easily now!

My favorite new trick was to swim on my side down the length of the pool and twist around to go back! I kept a “dive log” on Facebook, so everyone would know my progress.

Soon after, Thom gave me a lovely green fabric tail to swim in and the first chance I had, I was in the water! Thinking myself somewhat of a bad ass, I thought I had this. I was wrong.

The fabric added more resistance and the tricks did not come so easily anymore. Not to be discouraged, I kept up my training and soon I was back to swimming gracefully! I was not to actually swim in the urethane tail until I arrived at Mer-Palooza. I knew I had to be ready and nothing was going to stop me from being a great swimmer. Every step was important. It gave me a goal and I worked hard to achieve it!

I trained daily by working on my mermaid art and learning from Thom. However, that was not all I had to prep for Mer-Palooza. I ended up as the test mermaid for the new line of mermaid prosthetics, fins, gills, scales, and even webbed ears!

In addition, Thom had an amazing makeup artist, Brenda Salome, come out to do my makeup and turn me into a real creature of the deep sea. I had also created my own scale pasties and large bibbed collar from the old scale pieces pulled from my tail.

What things are in the works for next year?

Everything is coming and going so quickly. Mermaid gigs are coming in and I am looking forward to everything the world has to offer me! I hope to continue to show, sell and create my art. I hope to work as a mermaid and bring a little magic into the world. I always say…Improve, Uplift and Enlighten….so I guess that is what is in the works for New Year!
